This is one of the very
few touring car
trunks we've found in years and it's a really nice one too. Trunks, like nearly
everything else, had to adapt to the coming of the automobile and here's one
of the best examples. This beautiful trunk was probably meant for the back
of a large touring car like a Packard. Many companies, including Packard
themselves made these for all different models of cars. Eventually car
manufacturers made the trunk an integral part of the car and these wonderful
bits of history started to disappear so today they're more difficult to find
than the automobiles. Note the maker's label in brass, something very rare. Note
too the heavy nickel-plated hardware - the WORKING locks with key
(the only automobile trunk we've ever had with these), the
turnbuckles and the alignment dowel. The turnbuckles and locks were made by
Excelsior and are stamped with "USA Excelsior Stamford Conn.". The
trunk itself was made by W. R. Malm & Company in San Francisco. This trunk is all original
except for new leather handles and straps; otherwise we've only
cleaned and preserved it. The inside of the trunk is lined with the
original linen material that is in excellent condition. We found this
one near Mesa, CO. It dates back to the 1920s.
By the way, you don't
necessarily need a '20s car to enjoy a trunk like this; one car trunk
we sold ended up on the back of a PT Cruiser and the owner was ecstatic. If
you like it as well as we do then call us now, toll-free on 1-877-653-8786
