Sole Leather Trunk from 1870s, All Original Leather Covering, Beautiful Artwork and Much More; Back
Ditto

Sole Leather trunks became very popular in America a decade after the Civil War. They were made almost entirely of leather with very little wood under it. The leather is supported by steel bands, one of the earliest uses of steel. The leather covering on this one is all original; the handles are original, we've only replaced the straps. Note the beautiful deep tooling in the leather. Note also the very nice and interesting brass lock. There's almost as much to tell about the lock as the trunk itself. This lock was made by C. Liebrich in Philadelphia. It still works and comes with a key. The lock will "latch" and stay closed by pushing the upper half into its opening. To "unlatch" the lock the keyhole cover is slid to the side. The trunk can be locked securely with the key. The Phoenix-like bird was Liebrich's logo. An 1854 patent date appears on the lock as well as part of the maker's name and location. Similar patent dates appear on the corner rollers of the trunk. Most sole leather trunks were fancy and fairly complex; this one is an excellent example. Beautiful artwork appears both on the inside-lid compartment and the tray lid. The inside-lid compartment is hinged at the bottom, swings down onto the tray and reveals a rear opening. The lid of this opening is covered by a cloth pouch with a drawstring. The tray lid has handles and a document pouch on top. Two decorative brass latches hold the compartment closed. It may be a long time before we see the likes of this beauty so if you like it then don’t hesitate, it’ll soon find a new home.
