Beautiful Jenny Lind Antique Trunk from 1850s Brought Back to Life, Back
Ditto

As with so many trunks over the years, we bought this one for parts but when we got it home just didn't have the heart. The leather covering was nearly completely gone, had been wet at some time and left stains in a few places but the wood was just too good not to keep. So we went to work and here's the result. We hope you'll agree we made the right decision. Arguably, this is the most beautiful trunk design ever and named for one of the world's most beloved performers, Jenny Lind - The Swedish Nightingale. The original superstar, Jenny was discovered and brought to America by P. T. Barnum in the 1850s to tour. Although she only toured the East Coast, her popularity inspired the naming of a town in California for her. Soon streets and buildings all over, furniture of all kinds, even kitchen devices were blessed with her name. (She was extremely popular in Europe too; she's the only female mentioned in the Poet's Corner of Westminster Abbey in London; Hans Christian Anderson wrote songs for her; a polka was written and named for her.) The trunks she used on her tour were quickly copied by makers world-wide and now are the most collectable of all. This size makes it very convenient to display anywhere you want. The lock plate is original and very decorative. Note all the brass buttons on the iron straps. We've replaced the leather handles and the short straps. This lovely trunk can be displayed open or closed and will fit in just about anywhere, foot of a bed, foyer, bay window or wherever you choose. We found it in Winston-Salem, NC on one of our local trunk-hunting trips.
